On this day in space history

 

On 1 August every year, the meteor shower known as the Alpha Capricornids reaches its peak. This is a meteor shower which lasts from 15 July until 11 September. The shower has the reputation of producing some of the brightest meteors of the major showers, with the average magnitude being estimated as about 2.2.
