The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), since its establishment in 1989, has been the driving force behind aerospace research and development in Korea as the leading national R&D institute in this field. It has been an IAF member since 1992.

Mission & Function

Conduct Research & Development and Utilization of the Integrated System and Core Technologies for Aircraft, Satellite and Space Launch Vehicle

  • Develop Cutting-Edge Aircraft / Test and Evaluate Aircraft / Support the National Project to Develop Aircraft
  • Conduct R&D and Launch Satellite and Develop Satellite Utilization Technology
  • Develop and Launch the Space Launch Vehicle System and Operate Space Center

Develop Technology to Ensure Aerospace Safety and Quality

  • Function as the Government's Quality Certification Agency for Aerospace Products
  • Conduct Cross-Certification with Other Countries

Help Develop Policy for National Aerospace Development

  • Distribute and Propagate Technological Information on Aerospace Science

Collaborate with Industry and Academy in the Use of Testing and Evaluation Facilities

  • Transfer Technologies Obtained from R&D Activities
  • Support Commercialization of Technologies
  • Involve in Technology Sharing
  • Carry Out Education & Training

On 25 August 2009, the KARI-built Naro-1 was successfully launched to become the Republic of Korea's first indigenous rocket.
