HISTORY

During September 1951 in London, delegates of several European and American astronautical associations, gathering at the second International Astronautical Congress, fulfilled their desire to develop international cooperation in the field of astronautics and founded the International Astronautical Federation (IAF).

From 1951 onwards, the Federation has organised the International Astronautical Congress (IAC). In 1960, the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and International Institute of Space Law (IISL) were formed by space academist and lawyer members of the IAF and become independent organisations. Since 1960, the three organisations have been responsible for the IAC together.

During the 1980s, the Federation moved from its policy of one (society) member per country to an inclusive model.

Membership of the IAF has grown over the years to 200 members who together are responsible for over 99% of the world space budgets.

The following countries were signatories to the foundation of the IAF in London on 4 September 1951:-
