Every year, generally in early October, the IAF together with its associates the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and the International Institute of Space Law (IISL), holds the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) which is hosted by one of the national societies, a member of the IAF. Future eventsPast eventsFrom 1997 onwards, the IAF has also been organising focused workshops and symposia on specific topics of current interest to complement the more all-inclusive annual International Astronautical Congress. 2009200820072005A specialists' symposium was held in Paris in early 2005. It addressed 'New Space Services for Maritime Users and impact of the Satellite Technology on Maritime Legislation'. 2001A specialists' symposium, devoted to 'Space Activities in Russia and Ukraine at the dawn of the 21st century' was held in Paris, France, in December 2001. 2000The first Symposium of the 2000s was organised with the International Space University (ISU), and the main space agencies and industries. It was held in Strasbourg, France in April 2000 and its theme was 'Bringing Space into Education'. 1999'Novel Concepts for Smaller, Faster & Better Space Missions' was held in Redondo Beach, United States. 180 experts attended making it a very successful symposium. The symposium was sponsored by Microcosm, Inc., Orbital Sciences Corporation, and JPL. 1997'Mission Design and Implementation of Satellite Constellations' was organised in November 1997 in Toulouse, France, at the initiative of the Astrodynamics Committee. This symposium, sponsored by the French Space Agency, Alcatel Space and former Matra Marconi Space brought together 142 participants from 11 countries.
