Image of the day
On 18 January 2000, the glow of X-rays seen in all directions in space was shown to come from particular sources by Chandra. This ended the notion that the X-rays come from distant hot gas. Below, this Chandra image shows Casseiopeia A, the youngest supernova remnant in the Milky Way.

This day in space history

On 18 January 2004, the OMEGA instrument on ESA's Mars Express mapped the South polar cap of the Red Planet. OMEGA, the combined camera and infrared spectrometer, revealed the presence of water ice and carbon dioxide ice for the first time.
